    The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is an 8 week course for persons who have family members who are suffering from a mental health disorder. The course is conducted by volunteers (people who also have family members suffering from a mental health disorder) who have been trained to present the curriculum. It’s designed for the family members of people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar illness, (manic depression), borderline personality disorder (BPD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or who exhibit behaviors that strongly suggest one of these diagnoses. The course is not appropriate for individuals who are themselves suffering from one of these mental health disorders.

    Course Topics include:

    Our emotional responses to the trauma of a mental health disorder
    Symptoms and diagnosis of common mental health disorders: Schizophrenia, Depression, Bipolar Illness (Manic Depression), Borderline Personality Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
    The biology of the brain, and new research.
    Coping skills; handling crisis and relapse.
    Understanding what it’s like to have a mental health disorder.
    Listening and communication techniques.
    Problem solving and limit setting; rehabilitation.
    Self-care; recognizing the normal emotional reactions to chronic worry and stress caused by mental health disorders.
    Medications used to treat mental health disorders, and their side effects.
    Connecting with appropriate community services and community supports.
    Advocacy: Getting better services, fighting discrimination.

Il est conçu pour les familles dont un proche est atteint par la schizophrénie, la dépression, le trouble bipolaire, le trouble de la personnalité limite (TPL), le trouble obsessionnel compulsif (TOC) ou qui présente des comportements qui suggèrent, avec peu d’ambigüité, un de ces diagnostics. Le cours n’est pas approprié pour les gens qui ont eux-mêmes un trouble de santé mentale.

    The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is an 8 week course for persons who have family members who are suffering from a mental health disorder. The course is conducted by volunteers (people who also have family members suffering from a mental health disorder) who have been trained to present the curriculum. It’s designed for the family members of people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar illness, (manic depression), borderline personality disorder (BPD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or who exhibit behaviors that strongly suggest one of these diagnoses. The course is not appropriate for individuals who are themselves suffering from one of these mental health disorders.

    Our emotional responses to the trauma of a mental health disorder
    Symptoms and diagnosis of common mental health disorders: Schizophrenia, Depression, Bipolar Illness (Manic Depression), Borderline Personality Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
    The biology of the brain, and new research.
    Coping skills; handling crisis and relapse.
    Understanding what it’s like to have a mental health disorder.
    Listening and communication techniques.
    Problem solving and limit setting; rehabilitation.
    Self-care; recognizing the normal emotional reactions to chronic worry and stress caused by mental health disorders.
    Medications used to treat mental health disorders, and their side effects.
    Connecting with appropriate community services and community supports.
    Advocacy: Getting better services, fighting discrimination.

    Le cours famille-à-famille de NAMI est un cours de 8 semaines qui s’adresse aux membres d’une famille qui ont un proche atteint d’un trouble de santé mentale. Le cours est transmis par des pairs aidants bénévoles (personne qui a aussi un proche atteint d’un trouble de santé mental) et a reçu une formation spéciale pour présenter le programme. Il est conçu pour les familles dont un proche est atteint par la schizophrénie, la dépression, le trouble bipolaire, le trouble de la personnalité limite (TPL), le trouble obsessionnel compulsif (TOC) ou qui présente des comportements qui suggèrent, avec peu d’ambigüité, un de ces diagnostics.     FAMILY TO FAMILY, CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP

    The Family-to-Family Caregiver Support Group is a safe place for caregivers to share their stories and express their emotions freely with others who have loved ones with mental illness. NAMI Family to Family Education Program facilitator will enrich the process and provide tools for recovery.

    Throughout the eight weeks, the participants will have an opportunity to address their experiences as a caregiver along with recognizing the rewards of caregiving as well. Each meeting will include tips for improving their coping skills and most importantly focus on self-care. 

    By connecting with others with the similar struggles, the participants will feel less isolated and judged while gaining a sense of empowerment and control.

    Creative Expression Group

    Because it can be difficult to find time for ourselves when we have a loved one living with a mental health problem, especially with the circumstances we are currently living in, Friends for Mental Health invites you to join its Creative Expression Group at a distance.   

    The creative support group aims to offer a moment during which it will be possible for you to benefit from a listening ear, a support, a moment of respite and where it will be possible for you to freely express your thoughts and feelings, both visually and verbally.

    Although art and creation are used as a form of expression, no artistic experience is required.

    Important information about the Creative Expression Group:

    -          8 places available

    -          Bilingual

    -          Duration: 8 weeks

    -          Schedule: Thursday from 4pm to 6pm.  

    * Please note that we ask that you be present at all meetings.

    -          Where: will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent via email.

    -          Art materials: Please have different types of materials and artistic mediums available for the duration of the meetings. 

    * In order to benefit from a wide variety of materials, it may be advisable to have felt pens, wood crayons, paint (acrylic, gouache, watercolor), modeling clay or any other medium that inspires you. For those who wish, it will also be possible to purchase a bag containing basic artistic mediums for $10. Simply indicate this need when you register, and the procedure to follow to obtain it will be indicated to you. 

    -          Participation fee: 30$. 

    *In these difficult times, if you cannot afford the costs, please advise at the time of registration and we will waive the participation fee.

    Parce qu’il peut s’avérer difficile de trouver du temps pour soi lorsque nous avons un proche vivant avec un trouble de santé mentale, d'autant plus avec les circonstances dans lesquelles nous vivons présentement, les Amis de la Santé Mentale vous invite à rejoindre son Groupe d'expression créative à distance.    

    Le groupe de soutien créatif vise à vous offrir un moment durant lequel il vous sera possible de bénéficier d'une écoute, d'un support, d’un moment de répit et où il sera possible pour vous d'exprimer librement vos pensées et sentiments, tant visuellement que verbalement.

    Bien que l'art et la création soient employés comme forme d'expression, aucune expérience artistique n'est requise.

    Informations importantes concernant le Groupe d'expression créative :

    -          8 places disponibles

    -          Bilingue

    -          Durée : 8 semaines

    -          Horaire : jeudi de 16h à 18h. 

    * Notez que nous demandons que vous soyez présent.e à toutes les rencontres.

    -          Matériaux artistiques : ayez à votre disposition différents types de matériaux et médiums artistiques pour la durée des rencontres.
